### Author Biography

**Matthew Sweet** presents _Free Thinking_ on BBC Radio 4 and _Sound of Cinema_ on BBC Radio 3. His twenty-five years of programmes include _The Culture Show_ (BBC2), _Checking into History_ (C4), five series of _The Philosophers Arms_ (Radio 4) and _1922: The Birth of Now_, a ten-part history of modernism (Radio 4). He is the author of _Inventing the Victorians_ (Faber, 2001), _Shepperton Babylon_ (Faber, 2005), _The West End Front_ (Faber, 2011) and _Operation Chaos_ (Picador, 2018). He has been film critic of the _Independent on Sunday_, photography critic of _Newsweek_ and fashion columnist for _1843/The Economist_, and is co-writer, with Mark Gatiss, of the major U&alibi television series _Bookish_ (2025).
