by **Graham Greene** (Author), **Samuel Hynes** (Introduction by)

Raven is an ugly man dedicated to ugly deeds. His cold-blooded killing of a European Minister of War is an act of violence with chilling repercussions, not just for Raven himself but for the nation as a whole. The money he receives in payment for the murder is made up of stolen notes and when the first of these is traced, Raven becomes a man on the run. As he tracks down the agent who has been double-crossing him and attempts to elude the police, he becomes both hunter and hunted: an unwitting weapon of a strange kind of social justice. In doing so, he sets the stage for Greene's next novel, _Brighton Rock_. **This Penguin Classics edition features an introduction by Samuel Hynes.

### Author Biography

**Graham Greene** (1904-1991), whose long life nearly spanned the length of the twentieth century, was one of its greatest novelists. Educated at Berkhamsted School and Balliol College, Oxford, he started his career as a sub-editor of _The Times of London._ He began to attract notice as a novelist with his fourth book, _Orient Express,_ in 1932. In 1935, he trekked across northern Liberia, his first experience in Africa, recounted in _A Journey Without Maps_ (1936). He converted to Catholicism in 1926, an edifying decision, and reported on religious persecution in Mexico in 1938 in _The Lawless Roads,_ which served as a background for his famous _The Power and the Glory_, one of several "Catholic" novels (_Brighton Rock, The Heart of the Matter, The End of the Affair)._ During the war he worked for the British secret service in Sierra Leone; afterward, he began wide-ranging travels as a journalist, which were reflected in novels such as _The Quiet American, Our Man in Havana, The Comedians, Travels with My Aunt, The Honorary Consul, The Human Factor, Monsignor Quixote,_ and _The Captain and the Enemy._ In addition to his many novels, Graham Greene wrote several collections of short stories, four travel books, six plays, two books of autobiography--_A Sort of Life_ and _Ways of Escape_\--two biographies, and four books for children. He also contributed hundreds of essays and film and book reviews to _The Spectator_ and other journals, many of which appear in the late collection _Reflections._ Most of his novels have been filmed, including _The Third Man_, which the author first wrote as a film treatment. Graham Greene was named Companion of Honour and received the Order of Merit among numerous other awards.

**Samuel Hynes** is Woodrow Wilson Professor of Literature Emeritus at Princeton University and the author of several major works of literary criticism, including _The Auden Generation, Edwardian Occasions,_ and _The Edwardian Turn of Mind._ Hynes's wartime experiences as a Marine Corps pilot were the basis for his highly praised memoir, _Flights of Passage. The Soldiers' Tale_, his book about soldiers' narratives of the two world wars and Vietnam, won a Robert F. Kennedy Award. He is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
